Quick Facts
What is Selank?
Selank is a heptapeptide derived from tuftsin, a naturally occurring tetrapeptide with immunomodulatory properties. Developed in Russia at the Institute of Molecular Genetics, it has been approved there for treating generalized anxiety disorder and as a nootropic. Selank combines the sequence of tuftsin with additional amino acids for stability, resulting in a peptide with both anxiolytic and cognitive-enhancing properties.
How Does Selank Work?
Selank modulates the expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and affects the balance of neurotransmitters including serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine. It also influences the GABAergic system without causing sedation or dependence. Additionally, Selank has immunomodulatory effects inherited from its tuftsin backbone. Its cognitive effects may be related to enhanced neuroplasticity and memory consolidation.
